Welcome
back! I
hope you had a great summer of sun and fun and creative
inspiration. I certainly had my share of good times…but
I also had my proverbial plate piled pretty high!
As some of you may know, I’ve
been developing a family film for Universal, which was
supposed to shoot this summer but has been postponed.
Ah, show business! I also set up another script at MPCA,
which was an original spec – which they are now
turning into a sequel. I’m okay with that, as
long as the movie gets made!
I’ve also started rewriting a script that has
a director attached now, and I’m working on a
host of other script and book projects for clients,
some really exciting subjects. More on those as things
progress.
But what happened throughout all of this is some lack
of focus and clarity. As I became busy working on so
many projects, I also nearly lost the thread to the
things that matter most to me. And when that happens,
you are just moments away from booking a room in burnout
city!
Luckily, I caught myself and managed to regain that
connection. And since then, the new projects lining
up are much more in alignment with what I’m passionate
about. But it just reminded me how easily it is to get
so caught up in the daily grind that you forget about
why you actually wake up every morning.
How does this apply to you? Whatever you’re doing,
it’s very easy to get so involved in daily survival
that you lose sight of your long-term vision. Maybe
it’s your ‘day job’ that’s keeping
you busy; maybe it’s your family; or maybe it’s
any number of ways we procrastinate and waste time.
The fact is, if you don’t have a clear vision
of where you want your life to go, built on what matters
to you most, you will eventually burn out and give up.
So what can you do to avoid this?
You can read the rest of the article
below for starters!

PAY YOURSELF FIRST
No matter what your
worldly obligations are – work, family, community
– you have to put aside time on a daily basis
to feed your creative soul and take steps toward your
long-term goals. In the financial world, this is called
‘paying yourself first’, which means that
a portion of every paycheck goes straight into your
long-term savings or retirement plan before anyone else
gets paid.
The reason this is so important is that, without this
automatic system, the tendency is to pay everyone else
and then take what’s left for yourself and your
future – except there is rarely anything left!
There’s rarely enough money, time, or resources
to nurture yourself or build your dream – and
you look back 10, 20, 50 years and wonder where it all
went!
But you’re not going to do that, at least not
as long as I’ve got your attention. Because you’re
going to take the time – whether it’s 5,
10, 15 minutes or more a day – and get back in
touch with what matters to you most and what you want
to create with your personal and professional life.
This includes your financial goals as an artist/writer,
because without a financial foundation it is increasingly
difficult to support yourself and, therefore, your creative
expression. The result is that you are so drained from
helping others create their financial foundation (by
working for them) that you have little left for yourself.
This also includes designing a plan and strategy to
write the scripts (or books, plays, etc.) that you are
most passionate about – even if it’s just
a page a day. One page a day is 365 pages a year. That’s
potentially 3 screenplays, or one screenplay rewritten
many times.
This also must include some time set aside for working
‘on your business’ as opposed to ‘in
your business’. Working in your business is the
energy you put towards writing. Working ‘on’
your business is the energy you put towards building
contacts, networking, and marketing your scripts (whether
or not you have an agent).
If you just made one phone call or sent out one query
letter a day, that would be several hundred marketing
actions a year! Most writers never take that much action
in their lifetime! And that’s why most of them
fail. There are many ways to market your material;
• Post your scripts at
www.Inktip.com. They’ve sold more scripts than
just about anyone
• Go to pitch meetings and pitch your scripts,
then follow up. That is crucial to your success
• Go to parties, networking events, and writing
conferences. You’re a writer, you need to get
out more!
• Read writing magazines and trade magazines
to keep up on what is selling and who’s buying
Obviously there are many other
ways to market, but this should get you going. The key
is to put a system in place that allows you to write
and market your writing on a regular basis – regardless
of what’s going on in your life. You must not
let the outer world prevent you from living your vision
fully – even if only baby steps.
This is so important. Most people wait for things to
change before they think they can start living the life
of their dreams, but it doesn’t work that way.
You must become the change you want to see in the world,
by doing the inner and outer work to grow and progress
every day.
This brings me to the final point. We’re coming
into the Fall and then Winter months. This is a time
when the old falls away and the land appears to become
barren and devoid of life. But what’s really going
on is that the old is making way for the new growth
happening just beneath the surface.
Use this time to start eliminating everything in your
life that no longer serves your personal and professional
growth; whether that’s beliefs, habits, jobs,
and even people! Let it all go and make way for the
next wave of growth to emerge.
It’s also a time to nurture that new growth by
continuing to educate yourself. Learning doesn’t
stop when you leave school. You must become a lifelong
learner to really remain on the cutting edge. Read a
lot. Read scripts, novels, books on writing. Watch movies
and break down the beats. Go to conferences, workshops,
let your thinking and creative faculties stretch to
a whole new level!
And as you continue to grow beyond all the limitations
you had previously put on yourself, while writing on
a regular basis – no matter what is happening
– as Spring comes around you will be amazed at
the harvest you will reap!
Stay Inspired!
